i think it's likely that brands will create their own substacks but i'm really not interested in their pov. if i wanted to know more about them, i would have already been subscribed to their newsletters. similarly, founders starting substacks doesnt interest me. they already have a platform, they dont need to commandeer another app. it will be curious to see what happens to substack as the landscape becomes more cluttered
that's fair! what's your pov if your favorite substack writer starts something on their own (as in, they came up on substack, didn't have a platform before then) - would that be disappointing to see as well?
tbh, i dont think i even have a fav substack writer 😂 but, i love seeing new people, fresher voices get a platform and grow a following. that's exciting!! we need more fresh perspectives!! and if they grow and evolve past substack, start a business or whatever thats cool. i dont expect anyone to stay on one platform forever but i can't guarantee that i'll follow them into their next venture
"I want to see writing treated less like a product that could be commissioned and sold, and more like a medium that tells stories about the projects that happen IRL." - this quote will live forever in my mind. Great read!
Loved this! Curious what your thoughts are when it comes to founders starting Substacks? Obviously a bit different than a full brand presence, but there is an inherent, more subtle representation of the brand with more wiggle room for fun and acutal-humanness...
hmmmm I haven't decided what I think about it yet. It feels a little like the girlboss revival, and as someone who spent a good chunk of my early twenties idolizing female founders, personally, I am not really into it (but there is definitely an audience for it!!). Ultimately, I think it depends on the product and the founder - some of them are good writers and have personality and some don't. People can feel when you treat writing as a fun little project and when you are writing as part of your company's comms strategy or as a way to network. I like Melanie's Substack - she seems cool! I'd love creative directors of brands to talk more about their process, sources of inspo, etc. too
Completely agree, and same on the female founder admiration. Like most things, it's definitely more case-by-case. I definitely like Melanie's too, and I think the common thread with the successful iterations of these founder substacks is that they can stand alone without their brand. I guess you could call them founders with influencer potential? lol
