I loveddddd this. I’ve been thinking about this a lot with writing… niche appeal vs mass and the different decisions someone can make to get their voice heard. I’m curious, as substack grows and the app becomes better at generating subs for writers who primarily are known for their substack, what these niche ecosystems look like in a world that is more and more interested in independent art. Also.. what metrics even matter if you are interested in building a niche, cult brand on substack. Perhaps it isn’t subscriber growth and more engagement like metrics. Brilliant as always Vik!
thank you so much! and yes! I am suuuuuper curious to see how the niche vs mass appeal dynamics will play out on here in a couple of years from now. My eyes are on the people who are converting their writing into cool projects and ops rather than harvesting subs and views :)
adored every word
Niche communities have never been more accessible. Some for the better some for the worst. Love the post
