Every time I read something about Gen Z being sex negative I'm so confused because me and everyone I talk to agree that this is the horniest culture has ever been!
fun!! this is such a timely read considering bumble's recent campaign flop. maybe they should have considered upping the ante and leaning into a more sexy messaging rather than whatever they did do lol
This essay dropped a day before part one of Bridgerton S3 and I really think the feral horniness following that has a lot to do with what’s happening here. We get one sexy scene with no nudity and the Daily Mail is writing articles about how it is improving viewers sex lives. Horny culture is alive and well!!
"Another, maybe more obvious, shift in provocative creative direction is that more brands and artists are speaking to “the girls and the gays” rather than straight men."
Funny that you pointed this out. From my experience, I don’t often buy clothes for myself, but on the rare occasions that I do, I always feel like there are only a few items that really fit my preferences. When a brand designs what seems to be an original piece of clothing, I never see myself wearing it because it seems too “gay.” So, I often end up buying the same type of clothes from the same places—very simple ones, just in different colors.
It’s even worse when I shop online. The vast majority of male models pose in ways that look too “gay” or provocative (though not always), and the clothes they wear often don’t look good at all, making the whole experience a bit torturous. The more luxurious the brand, the worse it becomes.
Very interesting piece. For Courrèges, there was an amazing “pack” in System with a lot of references, subtle gems. I don’t think they will ever use the word “horny” but they definitely have a clear definition of sensuality. https://system-magazine.com/issues/issue-21/courreges

yeaaa they leaned heavy into the 2000s ad exec brain on that one but I thought this campaign from them was fun: https://www.instagram.com/p/CtwTkkNM-ZL/
the thing is.....the app experience is bad, so good marketing or bad marketing doesn't really make that much of a difference at this point imo
so true!!
